Chapter 14, in particular, is one gigantic anti-white racist rant through the voice of a teenaged “Palestinian” who acts as if he is surprised that he can’t find Palestine on a map (even though that country has never existed as an independent country in the entire history of man). Any time a White person is mentioned, it is in the context of them being either racist, not having ever had any personal issues to tackle, or being “well intentioned”….but ignorant. The story is wonderful with the jarring exception that the author cannot get over his evidently personal hatred of White people, which spews through the words of his characters throughout even though there is nothing in the story to cause each instance. Together with his female best friend, Enrique must overcome his self-doubt to find his way to a happy life. This is a (mostly) beautifully written coming of age story of a young boy who tries to explore his feelings, both physically and emotionally, while learning to cope with his feelings towards his handsome male best friend. With all these choices, Quique is sure to forget about Saleem in no time.īut as the summer heats up and his deep-seated fears and anxieties boil over, Quique soon realizes that getting over one guy by getting under a bunch of others may not have been the best laid plan and living his truth can come at a high cost. There’s stoner-jock Tyler Montana, who might be just as interested in Fabiola as he is in Quique straitlaced senior-class president, Ziggy Jackson and Manny Zuniga, who keeps looking at Quique like he’s carne asada fresh off the grill. Luckily, Quique’s prospects are each intriguing in their own ways. And definitely forget the fact that good and kind and, not to mention, beautiful Saleem is leaving LA for the summer to meet a girl his parents are trying to set him up with. Never mind that he has absolutely zero game. Never mind that he’s only out to his best friend, Fabiola. Enrique “Quique” Luna has one goal this summer-get over his crush on Saleem Kanazi by pursuing his other romantic prospects.
